چکیده

In this paper, we propose some adaptation to Geographical Information System (GIS) components used in GPS based navigation system. In our design process, we adopted a user-centered design approach in collaboration with final users and Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructors. A database scheme is presented to integrate the principal classes proposed by users and O&M instructors. In addition, some analytical tools are also implemented and integrated in the GIS. This adapted GIS can improve the guidance process of existing and future EOAs. A first implementation of an adapted guidance process allowing a better representation of the surroundings is provided as an illustration of this adapted GIS. This work is part of the NAVIG system (Navigation Assisted by Artificial VIsion and GNSS), an assistive device, whose aim is to improve the Quality of Life of Visually Impaired (VI) persons via increased orientation and mobility capabilities.

visually impaired pedestrians

Sighted guidance is arguably the most efficient method for aiding visually impaired pedestrians in mobility. A sighted guide's verbal instructions compensate comprehensively for the insufficiency of visual input in navigation. Moreover, the companionship entails sharing of responsibilities and thus increases the blind traveller's sense of security during a journey. The disadvantages of the sigh...

Investigating context-aware clues to assist navigation for visually impaired people

It is estimated that 7.4 million people in Europe are visually impaired [1]. Limitations of traditional mobility aids (i.e. white canes and guide dogs) coupled with a proliferation of context-aware technologies (e.g. Electronic Travel Aids, Global Positioning Systems and Geographical Information Systems), have stimulated research and development into navigational systems for the visually impair...

Understanding the Impact of Web Layout and Emotional Changes towards Navigation Behaviour among Visually Impaired Users

Facebook is the largest social network and it’s widely used by everyone. Facebook consists of webpages designed in modular layouts. Assistive technologies such as screen readers not able interpret the content in complex layout to visually impaired (VI) users. This causes lots of troubles to VI users. In order to understand the impact of layout to VI users’ navigation behavior, we conducted a co...

e-Accessibility: Making the Web Accessible to the Visually Impaired Persons

Accessibility is the possibility of any person to make use of all the benefits of society, including the use of the Internet. Graphical are an obstacle for visually impaired persons to access the Internet, so they need a support technology capable of capturing interfaces and making them accessible. Interfaces should be designed so that when accessed by support technologies they continue to be f...

Real-time GPS track simplification algorithm for outdoor navigation of visually impaired

Outdoor navigation of visually impaired people most often is based on data from the GPS maps and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Such systems cannot be used for navigation in the regions where there are not any GPS maps or the maps are not sufficiently precise and detailed. This article describes an algorithm for real-time GPS track simplification. The test results show that the proposed ...
